The highly anticipated sequel, Hades II, has thrust players into the role of Melinoë, Princess of the Underworld, facing a daunting new roster of foes and a fundamentally different approach to combat and progression. As with any roguelike, early runs are defined by failure, but smart play and focusing on key meta-progression systems can dramatically accelerate your mastery. Here are 8 vital tips, focusing on High-Efficiency strategies, that we wish we knew before facing the fury of Chronos.

1. Prioritize Magick and Omega Moves – Don’t Hold Back

Unlike Hades I, the entire combat loop in Hades II revolves around Magick and Omega Moves (charged attacks, specials, and casts). Many new players overlook this powerful resource, reserving it for emergencies.

  • Magick Management: Your Magick bar fully replenishes every time you enter a new chamber. This is a critical mechanic! Use your Omega Moves liberally throughout a fight, especially at the start of a new encounter, to clear waves of enemies quickly.
  • The Sorceress Arcana: Make the Sorceress Arcana Card (which slows time while channeling Omega Moves) your absolute first unlock. This provides crucial i-frames and time to reposition, making heavy Omega Attacks a safe and reliable option.

2. Master the Sprint – It’s Your New Dodge

Melinoë’s movement is a significant departure from Zagreus’s rapid-fire double dash. Relying on repeated dashing will get you killed by later Guardian (boss) and Elite attacks.

  • Dash vs. Sprint: Your quick Dash is for precise, short-duration i-frames (invincibility). However, for large area-of-effect (AoE) attacks, sweeping enemy formations, and long-range projectiles, you must Sprint by holding the dash button.
  • The Sprint Advantage: Sprinting grants sustained, fast movement that can outrun almost any major boss attack. Look for Boons from Apollo or Poseidon that enhance your Sprint speed and damage to make it a central pillar of your defensive and offensive strategy.

3. Unlock and Upgrade Arcana Cards with Ashes ASAP

The Arcana System is your primary source of Permanent Power early on. Do not neglect it. You unlock and equip Arcana Cards at the Altar using two key High-Value resources.

  • Prioritize Ashes: Always favor Ashes (grey reward icon) over Bones in the early game. Ashes are the currency for unlocking new cards.
  • Focus on Eternity and Sorceress:
    • The Eternity Card grants you a Death Defiance (extra life) for the run—a non-negotiable early upgrade.
    • The Sorceress Card (as noted above) provides the essential safety net for using your Omega Moves.

4. Immediately Cast ‘Night’s Craftwork’ and Prioritize the Crescent Pick

The Incantation Cauldron is the heart of your Meta-Progression. The single most important early Incantation unlocks all your Gathering Tools for subsequent runs.

  • Incantation Focus: Use your first few bits of Moly (the yellow flower in Erebus) to cast ‘Night’s Craftwork’. This opens the tool selection at the Silver Pool.
  • The Crescent Pick: Unlock the Crescent Pick first (it only costs 1 Ash). This tool allows you to gather Silver, which is required to unlock most other tools and new Nocturnal Arms (weapons). This is the key to accelerating your entire resource economy.

5. Distribute Nectar for Keepsakes and Permanent Buffs

Keepsakes are temporary, powerful items that provide a huge advantage at the start of a run. You get one by gifting Nectar to an NPC for the first time.

  • Gift Widely, Not Deeply: Your goal should be to give a single Nectar to every available NPC to unlock their Keepsake.
  • Top Early Keepsakes:
    • Silken Sash (Dora): Gives you starting Armor. Armor lasts until the end of a chamber, and you regain one stack between chambers, providing invaluable early-run sustained defense.
    • Luckier Tooth (Schelemeus): Grants a full Death Defiance (extra life).
    • Knuckle Bones (Hades I): Grants a temporary buff in boss fights—excellent for learning tough Guardian patterns.

6. Treat Early Runs as Resource Runs – Survival Over DPS

In the beginning, your low base damage and limited Arcana mean you should treat every run not as an attempt to beat the game, but as a chance to collect materials for your next permanent upgrade.

  • Resource Priority: Always check the door reward before choosing a chamber. Focus on rooms that offer Ashes, Centaur Hearts (which grant max health + an immediate heal), and resource-gathering opportunities.
  • Avoid Elite Rooms: Early on, rooms marked with a Skull Icon contain tough Minibosses that can end a run prematurely. Unless you feel confident or desperately need the reward, choose the safer path to prolong your run and collect more High-Value resources.

7. Leverage the Cast for Crowd Control and Set-Up

Melinoë’s base Cast is fundamentally different—it’s a powerful tool for Crowd Control and costs no Magick.

  • Free Snare: Your base Cast drops a patch that Snares enemies, effectively locking them in place. Use this to create space, isolate dangerous enemies, or set up a clean shot for your Omega Attack.
  • Essential Boons: Prioritize Boons that enhance your Cast’s function, such as those that make the snare deal damage over time (Hera’s or Hestia’s effects) or those that allow your Special to target the cast area (Aspect of Pan on the Sister Blades).

8. Forge Builds with Purpose – Don’t Chase Rarity Alone

A mediocre boon that synergizes perfectly with your weapon and other buffs is better than a high-rarity boon that doesn’t fit your current build. Every run requires you to commit to a specific style.

  • Build Examples:
    • Fast Weapons (Witch’s Staff, Sister Blades): Favor Hestia’s Scorch or Zeus’s Thunder to quickly stack up damage-over-time or continuous damage on enemies.
    • Slow Weapons (Moonstone Axe): Favor Aphrodite’s or Hephaestus’s percentage-based and high-impact attack boons for maximum burst damage per swing.
  • The Daedalus Hammer: Never pass up a Daedalus Hammer. These permanent weapon upgrades are often build-defining and provide an immediate, guaranteed boost to your power, ensuring your run has a better chance of success.
